Committee Member
Service as a committee member is a one-year appointment with potential for reappointment for up to two additional terms. Service requires participation on monthly conference calls and collaborative involvement on projects that meet the committee mandate. Geographically underserved members are encouraged to apply2024/2025 Meeting time is the second Monday of the month at 3 pm ET.

Mandate: The AASM Advocacy Committee provides nonpartisan guidance and support for the implementation of AASM policy priorities at the local, state, and federal level in the United States. The committee helps develop strategies to engage members in local and national advocacy efforts and advance the AASM Legislative and Policy Agenda with elected officials, state and federal agencies.

Preliminary Goals for 2025/2026:

  1. Build personal relationships with elected and appointed officials and their staff at all levels of government to strengthen the AASM advocacy grassroots network.
  2. Review AASM advocacy resources and help draft or provide feedback on resolutions, letters, fact sheets and other communication to advance the AASM Legislative and Policy Agenda.
  3. Collaborate with the AASM Board of Directors and AASM volunteer groups on setting federal and state-level advocacy priorities.
  4. Work with staff to gain support in Congress and federal agencies by participating in virtual and in-person Hill visits as needed.
  5. Develop strategies to recruit other AASM members and other stakeholders and engage them in advocacy activities at the local, state and federal level.
  6. Work with staff to develop strategies and identify speakers for periodic meetings of the Congressional Sleep Health Caucus.
  7. Identify and collaborate with organizations with similar advocacy priorities to amplify our voice.
  8. Explore the integration of the Patient Advocacy Roundtable into the work of the committee.

Committee, task force and panel members are required to disclose any relevant conflicts when appointed in order to determine the appropriate management of conflicts. Any new conflicts that arise during a member’s term must also be disclosed at that time.
